An introduction

REX NEEDLE

THIS PROJECT is the result of many years of research, writing and photographing the locality, originally for the Bourne Internet web site and now as a permanent record of our history and heritage. I have attempted to write a narrative of this town from the earliest times, giving a glimpse of the people and places that were known in past centuries, through to the present day and so provide a portrait of Bourne as it is now. We are told that our fortunes for the future are influenced by our past deeds and so it has proved with this town because it is easy to identify those who were instrumental in determining its progress. Only a few names have survived to enable us chart this course and perhaps we might even call them men of destiny, though whether the results were determined or incidental is another matter. Nevertheless, they all appear to have been fired by a spirit of charity and goodwill for the sake of Bourne that may not have progressed without them and it is worthwhile considering how many of those who are now concerned with our daily affairs might be so remembered in the future. The task has been a long but enjoyable one although it is not yet over because there is still much to learn and to record for future generations who will wish to know about the place where they live. Omissions will therefore be remedied and errors amended for as long as I am able.

"My warmest congratulations on A Portrait of Bourne. Your work deserves
the title 'The definitive history of Bourne'. I was fascinated by the amount of
research you have done and its comprehensive nature. I was particularly interested
in the amount of recent detail you have amassed which has filled in the gap
between my own efforts and the present day."
