The churchyard

Churchyard

OUR CHURCHYARDS are often called God's little acre because that is usually the size of the land and it is also consecrated ground. They have been largely untouched by progress since they were established and have become havens for wildlife, often within an urban environment, but few receive the attention they should and most are tended only occasionally while the tombstones that commemorate the great and the good of the parish in past times are neglected and overgrown, covered in ivy and lichen, often leaning and sometimes crumbling, while others have collapsed altogether, but still bearing the names of those who went before, remembered only by a few words that fade even further with the passing years.

The churchyard adjoining the Abbey Church in Bourne is a secluded spot, just a short step from the busy town centre, and you can also find the Old Grammar School here, a red brick building dating from 1636. If the time and money were available, this ancient burial ground could be turned into a place that people would seek out to sit for a few moments of contemplation, for what better place to find peace and quiet than in a graveyard?
