Extensive improvements to the Wellhead Gardens have been carried out in recent months by Bourne United Charities who administer this green space on behalf of the town and the latest project in the late summer of 2013 was to build an attractive riverside walk along the Bourne Eau from South Street to the Wellhead Gardens. The pathway here has been unsatisfactory for many years, especially in wet weather, and the new surface and timber railing has considerably enhanced this part of the parkland, making it a must for Sunday afternoon walkers or indeed anyone who wishes to enjoy this open space just a few steps away from the town centre at any time.

Unfortunately, the surface of the walkway was soft underfoot and turned into a quagmire after a spell of heavy rain such as that in late December 2013 which made it impassable for walkers over the Christmas and New Year holiday.

The main footpath through the Wellhead Gardens was also being replaced with the northern section completed and by December work had begun on the town section, although barriers allowed access for visitors.

Mallard, moorhen and a multitude of other birds flock to the War Memorial Gardens to be fed by visitors who call there regularly with their children carrying small treats, a ritual so regular that they have become quite tame in pursuit of a tasty morsel.

Ground staff have planted some 11,000 daffodil bulbs in and around the Wellhead Gardens which were in bloom by March with a sparkling display along the banks of the Bourne Eau in South Street (above) and behind Baldock's Mill where the entire area once enclosed by shrubs and bushes has been opened up to visitors (below) with the installation of another public seat.
