as yet unidentified. Anyone reading this who may have

Volunteer rifleman

FROM THE MID-19TH CENTURY

A rifleman from the Bourne Volunteers, proudly posing in uniform most probably for Joseph Flatters, a photographer working for Rogers & Hester, a grocery and drapery store in the market place. He was also a private serving with the 15th Lincolnshire Rifle Volunteers based at Bourne and was a crack shot with his regiment, winning many prizes. Flatters emigrated to Canada with his family in 1871 and so this picture must have been taken before the summer of that year when he sailed.

FROM THE GREAT WAR

A gunner in the Royal Artillery home on leave and having his picture taken for relatives and friends. The photographer was Ashby Swift who was in business in the town from 1904 until he died in 1941.
He also served in the Great War of 1914-18, enlisting in the Royal Flying Corps in 1916 and so this photograph must have been taken at his riverside studio in South Street before he joined his unit.
