Marjorie Spencer 1941-2012 One girl who arrived in Bourne during those wartime years found a new family and stayed on. She was Marjorie Spencer who was evacuated from Hull in 1941 and was billeted with Jack and Hannath Smith (later of Mill Drove) becoming part of the family. After school, she worked for the Midland Bank and later joined the Smith family's grocery business at their shop in North Street where she became a familiar figure behind the counter. Marjorie never married but her interests were many including history, nature and wildlife, living her final years in the Stanton Close retirement complex where she made even more friends and took part in their varied activities. She died at Peterborough City Hospital after a short illness on Monday 24th September, aged 84, and the funeral was held at the Abbey Church on Thursday 11th October before a packed congregation followed by cremation at Peterborough.
