The absence of motor
vehicles and the peace and quiet of a Sunday afternoon is reflected in this photograph of West Road taken from a postcard posted in 1913. The gas lamps that were a
feature
of the
town at that time can be seen at the footpath's edge
and several
people
are
out walking, a popular pastime of the period.
Two later scenes from West Road,
circa 1920, with the motor car making one
of its first appearances although the horse and cart is still in evidence
and the piles it left behind, always good for garden manure.
Winter scenes in West Road photographed by Ashby
Swift in 1905.
