Abbey Road in past
times

Abbey Road, pictured
circa 1900, with the London Central Meat Company at No 15,
identified by the firm's initials on the canvas awning. The shop
with the windows covered is Barratt's Bazaar run by Henry Barratt, a
basket maker and dealer in fancy goods, who was in business during
the early years of the 20th century. |

This photograph
dates from around 1910 before the motor car choked our streets and
when children could play in the middle of the road without fear of
being knocked down. The prominent building on the left in the
middle of the picture is the Light Dragoon Inn, now used as retail
premises including a betting shop. |

Abbey Road, looking
towards the town centre, circa 1910. The gas lamps have long since
gone, as have the telegraph poles, while the thatched and
whitewashed cottage and the tiny sweetshop next door with the
children standing outside were demolished to make way for Nowell's
Lane, leading to Recreation Road around 1930. |

A picture postcard from 1970 showing several
businesses that have since closed or moved, including the Jubilee
Garage further down the road on the right. |
