The almshouses at Kirkby Underwood Five almshouses or bedehouses were founded at Kirkby Underwood by Richard Brownlow in 1638 when the Brownlow family were owners of the parish but by the early years of the 20th century they were in a poor state of repair and, having been declared unfit for human habitation, they were demolished in 1939. These photographs provide a fascinating glimpse of these properties and one of the tenants before they were were pulled down.
