Little Dowsby

Little Dowsby cottages

The adjoining hamlet of Little Dowsby has long since disappeared. It consisted mainly of a row of five stone and pantiled cottages occupied by farm workers and situated between Milthorpe and Dowsby villages. They were demolished in 1941 and so this small but compact community disappeared.

The nearest end cottage was occupied by Frank Gibbons and his wife Thelma between 1923 and 1936 and they subsequently moved to Dowsby.

There was also a water mill at Little Dowsby, situated on the River Ave some 100 yards upstream towards Aslackby and driven by both steam and water. It was known as Claypole's Mill, named after the last miller John William Claypole who lived at the nearby miller's house which was regarded as a fine building. The mill was operating in 1900 and still in use at the time Frank Gibbons lived in the hamlet. John Claypole is buried with his wife in the churchyard at Dowsby.
