Council chairmen & Mayors of Bourne

since 1894

 

BOURNE PARISH COUNCIL came into being as a result of the Local 
Government Act of 1894 but lasted only five years. Because of the size and 
population of the area covered, the council successfully petitioned for 
urbanisation which was granted by Kesteven County Council in May 1898 
and the new authority was formed the following year. The chairmen of the 
parish council during that period were as follows:

BOURNE URBAN DISTRICT COUNCIL came into being in 1899 and continued 
for 75 years until the local government re-organisation of 1974 when its 
responsibilities were handed over to BOURNE TOWN COUNCIL.

BOURNE URBAN DISTRICT COUNCIL
ceased to exist on 12th March 1974 and 
its duties and responsibilities were taken over by the parish council which, because 
of the town's historic status, was given special dispensation to become 
BOURNE TOWN COUNCIL
with a chairman who was also the mayor.
The Coat of Arms of the old urban district council
was acquired by the new authority and is used
to this day. The motto Vigila et Ora means
Watch and Pray.

BOURNE RURAL DISTRICT COUNCIL 
came into being in 1894, responsible for 
the villages and the country area around the town and in 1931 it became
SOUTH KESTEVEN RURAL DISTRICT COUNCIL The council continued in existence until the local government re-organisation of 1974, when its responsibilities were handed over to 
SOUTH KESTEVEN DISTRICT COUNCIL. 
The coat of arms, pictured left, has now fallen into disuse. The motto Ora et Ara means Prayer and Refuge.

FROM THE ARCHIVES

Mr Richard Woulds died at Bourne on Tuesday last, aged 74. For the last 34 years he had satisfactorily performed the duties of clerk of that parish. The office had been in the hands of his family for upwards of a century and he will, it is understood, be succeeded by his son, Mr John Woulds.
