Band concerts

Music in the park has become a feature of the War Memorial gardens in recent years. The summer season of Sunday afternoon concerts by visiting brass bands began in 1999 and continue to entertain.

They are organised by South Kesteven District Council during July and August, providing ninety minutes of popular music by various local bands that attract enthusiastic audiences sitting on chairs from the nearby Darby and Joan club or merely lounging on the grass. Among those bands that have played here are the City of Lincoln Band, Rushden Town Band, Stamford Brass and Kirton Brass Band.

When the weather is fine, this is a most enjoyable and traditional entertainment for a Sunday afternoon and refreshments are available from the hall.

Music in the park in August 1999 with Rushden Town Band

Music in  the park in the summer of 2009 with the City of Lincoln Band. This was a particularly hot day and the bandsmen took off their splendid red tunics to cool off although this did not affect the quality of their playing. Unfortunately, the occasion also clashed with the finals of the men's tennis singles championship at Wimbledon which was being screened on television at the same time and so the usual audience was rather depleted but equally enthusiastic.

IN HALL IF WET

Bad weather fails to stop the concerts and after a long spell of heavy rain, the Yarwell and Nassington Brass Band finished up playing in the Darby and Joan Hall on Sunday 8th July 2012 rather than risk the audience getting wet.
