Cleaning the Bourne Eau

One of the town's greatest assets is the Bourne Eau, once used for transport and trade and even pleasure boating but now largely neglected.

The section above Mays Sluice behind Eastgate has been a particularly bad example, a stretch of water that has been frequently choked with weeds and algae and littered with rubbish floating on the surface. Yet as in Victorian times, the path alongside remains a popular riverside walk and visitors can often be seen strolling along the bank although their enjoyment would be enhanced if this spot were better maintained.

This summer, work has finally been carried out to clean the river at this point and in recent weeks a dredger has been busy removing the accumulated growth that has been choking the waterway. The result has been most encouraging and it is hoped that the work will now continue on a regular basis.
