Cuckoo Bush Cottage in 1910

Photographed in 1910

A quaint thatched house known as Cuckoo Bush Cottage that once stood isolated in North Road became the subject of an Edwardian picture postcard entitled A Bit of Old Bourne and copies were bought locally by visitors and posted to addresses throughout the world.
During the 19th century it was owned by Edward Briggs, a shepherd, whose son had emigrated to seek his fortune but they lost touch and so when he died his nieces inherited the property and sold it for £190 at public auction. The cottage was subsequently demolished to make way for an access to Digby Court, the care home for old people which opened in Christopher's Lane in 1965, although many older residents insist on referring to this spot as Cuckoo Bush.
