Baldock's Mill in 1905

Photographed in 1905

The most dramatic change in this view of Baldock’s Mill from the west is the appearance of the Bourne Eau which is seen here over a century ago as a wide and flowing river providing sufficient power to drive the mill wheel for grinding corn but continuous water extraction over the years to supply a wider catchment area has reduced the river to little more than a stream.
The mill building which dates from 1800 has a frontage on South Street and is now Grade II listed. It no longer grinds corn but remains in useful service as the town’s Heritage Centre while the mill wheel has been restored to provide green energy for heating and lighting.
