Market Day in 1900

Photographed in 1900

Thursday market day in Bourne has always been a day of snapping up bargains from visiting tradesmen and of socialising with other shoppers, the place to meet and gossip about the weather or the events of the day.
The town centre when it was used as the market place was conducive to such a gathering, unhindered by passing traffic and within easy reach of the many hostelries which provided welcome refreshment.
This was the scene a century ago before the market was moved to its present location behind the Town Hall in 1990 because of the danger from passing traffic and with it went some of the intimacy of past times.
