The Abbey House
AN IMPOSING Georgian mansion
once stood to the north of the Abbey Church overlooking the river. It was
built in 1764 by George Pochin, Lord of the Manor of Bourne Abbots, and
known as the Abbey House although sometimes referred to as Bourne Abbey.
He died in 1798 and in 1849, ownership passed to the church and the
building was converted for use as a vicarage. In 1877, the mansion was pulled down and the stone used to build a new vicarage but that too was phased out in 1983 and replaced by the present house which was built on the former bowling green while the old building continues in useful service as the Cedars retirement home. |
